Sound was used throughout the whole Soprano video clip. In the beginning of the video, there was soundtrack music playing, introducing the title. When Mr. Soprano was waiting in the lobby of the therapist's, there was complete silence. As he was talking to the therapist, the sound of Mr. Soprano tapping his hands on the couch was apparent. Later, suspenseful music starts to play when Mr. Soprano was talking about what happened that day, creating a dramatic mood. Environmental sounds were heard during the scene when Mr. Soprano was walking on his driveway, seeing the ducks coming out of the pool and quacking.
3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project? Explain research, using different applications, layout and design of your magazine or video.
When starting this project, I had barely any knowledge about the production of magazines. Researching was a huge part in helping develop my knowledge throughout this project. By researching, I understood the terminology and the logic behind the production. Understanding why many magazines had large texts and bright colors made me realize how most magazines are formatted. Throughout this project, I learned how to format a magazine and how to use Photoshop, which I haven't used before. I learned how to use various tools on Photoshop such as the crop tool and the lasso tool. Throughout the project, I've gained many skills and learned a great amount about the production of magazines. 2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?
My magazine engages with audiences in various ways. One way my magazine will engage with the audience is by using social media such as twitter and instagram. By being on the platform, the audience can voice their opinions about the magazine and give feedback for how to advance it. Our magazine's social media platforms can also have exclusive posts of their favorite artists that can only be seen on the platform. Another way my magazine can engage with the audience is by having an interactive website. This can allow the audience to read more about an article from the magazine. My magazine, New Music, will be distributed nationally throughout online outlets and on paper. My magazine will first be posted on our interactive website and later on will be distributed to stores, on paper. By doing this, we can target all of our audience whether it'd be online or if they see it in a store. My magazine will also be posted on social media including facebook and instagram. This can reach the younger demographic since a great percentage of Generation Z has social media. 4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
Throughout this project, technology was a necessity in order to create the magazine. To collect research for my magazine, I used Google to find information and news on upcoming artists. Sites such as YouTube, Wikipedia, and Billboard helped me find artists on the rise. I also used Photopea.com to create, edit, and format my magazine cover, which allowed me to learn the basics of Photoshop. The hardware I used to create my magazine was all done on my 2020 MacBook Pro. 1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
The genre of my magazine is music and contains features including the masthead and headlines. The magazine cover is kept minimalistic and has toned-down colored text. This challenges conventions because most magazines do not put the spotlight on new or rising artists. It also challenges conventions because it caters towards a younger demographic, which most magazines do not, which includes Generation Z or millennials. The simplicity and the artists on the cover of the magazine draws more attention to Gen Z than it does to an older demographic. My magazine, New Music, focuses on promoting artists new music. This issue in particular narrows in on young artists. The cover of my magazine includes a band, ‘The Wallows’ whose target demographic are young people who enjoy pop music. The Magazine also contains artists such as Shawn Mendes and 21 Savage, all of which have young listeners. This points to the representation of the teen and young adult social groups. Camera Shots: The video consists of medium shots, medium close-up shots, extreme close-up shots, POV shots, two, three and four shots, full shots, long shots, and over the shoulder shots. The video also uses low angles, pans and tacking shots. The medium shots were used when Mr.Soprano was looking at the statue, when the psychiatrist opens the door, when he sat in the psychiatrist chair, when he was in bed and when people were in the kitchen. The medium close-up shots were used when showing a statue, when Mr.Sopranos daughter’s friend was looking at him, and when he was talking to the psychiatrist. There were extreme close-up shots of Mr. Soprano’s eye and POV shots in the introduction in the car. Two, three, and four shots were used when Mr. Soprano was in the psychiatrist office and in the kitchen. Over the shoulder shots were used when the psychiatrist invites Mr. Soprano in. Sound: During the intro, background music was playing but stopped and was quiet until someone opened a door. When Mr.Soprano was speaking to the psychiatrist, there was no background music, but the music came back when he was talking about his day. When Mr. Soprano was talking to the ducks, the background music stopped. Editing:As the house was being shown, the sky changed from night to morning. When Mr. Soprano was telling his story, it was edited to show him talking and then him voicing over it. Some shots were blurred in the background to focus on the main thought. Mise-en-scene: Mr. Soprano’s story shows that it was the morning in his house, which looks to be in the late 90’s or early 2000’s. Meaning: The POV shots in the car in the beginning were used to show Mr. Soprano’s bumpy car ride and to make it more realistic. The music and sounds were used to create a certain tone for the scene and to set the mood. |
