Throughout the years, media has affected people's lives. Media ownership and funding in contemporary media practice has heavily impacted the production, distribution, and marketing of media such as films, music, news, and more. Due to media ownership and funding, many advantages were created; however, multiple issues are raised.
Media ownership is discussed as when a large organization/comp any, known as a conglomerate, has control over the media and/or a smaller company. For instance, 20th Century Fox and Time Warner are conglomerates because they both distributed major movie franchises such as Star Wars, X-Men, Joker, and many more. Since conglomerates have so much influence in media and smaller companies, this can benefit the smaller companies and conglomerates can give them more spotlight and success; however, an issue that media ownership causes is if the conglomerate loses success, smaller organizations under that conglomerate will also have pay the price, which can create more issues in production and distribution of media that will be discussed. Conglomerates have a massive influence on how media, such as music and movies are produced in smaller companies. An issue caused by media ownership and funding in contemporary media practice is the originality of films. The success of a film partially depends on the originality of it, and in most movies that conglomerates produce, they lack originality. Another Issue that is raised due to media ownership and funding in contemporary media practice is the perception of media, such as news. Since conglomerates have immense leverage over the audience's, this influences them to listen to a certain bias that the conglomerates have. An example of this can be News Corp. and WarnerMedia News. Fox News, a relatively right winged news channel is owned by News Corp. while CNN is a left leaning news channel that is owned by WarnerMedia News. These conglomerates produce different media that sway to their opinion, which can lead to their audiences not getting the correct information of the media. Media ownership and funding in contemporary media practice has given conglomerates a wide range of power. This raises issues in media production, distribution, and marketing including the lack of originality of films, news biases, and the dependency of small businesses. Media ownership has created some benefits, but multiple issues have been created due to it.

To what extent has social media altered how media products are consumed?
Throughout the years, the production and distribution of music has changed immensely due to social media. Social media has altered how media products are consumed to a great extent, especially in the music industry. Before social media was introduced, music was distributed through physical copies such as records and cd's. Now that technology has advanced, most music is distributed digitally through platforms such as Spotify. Due to how massive social media has gotten, sales of these records and cd's have dropped. Instead of buying physical copies of music, consumers have been purchasing digital, monthly subscriptions to listen to music including Spotify, Apple Music, and more. The production and distribution of music has been heavily influenced by social media. Many artists get their start in the music industry by sharing their talent on social media such as Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. This has gotten artists noticed by big production companies and has boosted their career. An example of this can be Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd, and Justin Bieber, who all got notice from their YouTube videos of them covering a song. Over time, media products are consumed in an extremely different way due to social media. |
